With amazing timeliness, we bring you this post about Ante Art, and what we got up to while we were there.

Ante-art was a 100% DIY arts fair, taking place in Shipley Kirkgate Market over two days of the May Day weekend. It featured exhibits by artists and collectives such as Black Dogs, Bristow & Lloyd, Knit a Bear Face, and the Caged Bird Club, among many others. The exhibition ran all weekend, with a book fair on the Saturday, and an ‘art factory’ on the Sunday.

The art factory included an “Idiot’s Lowbrow Print Workshop” and “Knitting Takes Guts“, as well as a letterpress workshop.

Participants were invited to add, typeset and print a word to go into a collaborative sentence. Here’s how that turned out.

Ante-ART, ShipleyAnte-ART, Shipley“Ante takes the idea of art and scrapes off the dogma, the commercialism and the elitism. Ante explores and celebrates the use of art and print as an expression of free will and a megaphone for those whose collective voices struggle to be heard.

Ante is Shipley’s May Day celebration, taking place at the Kirkgate Centre on the 5-6th May. Saturday starts with a small press, zine and print fair followed by a benefit gig. Sunday is an ante-Art factory – dress for mess and produce your own £25million masterpiece. Ante-exhibition all weekend.”

Lots of great things happening with this event, and did we mention we printed the flyers on the left?

Found this over on the Moveable Type blog, a serious case of “typomania” if there ever was one.

‘Moveable Type’ in this case refers to the ‘Type Truck’, a truck full of type and printing equipment travelling around the US giving people the chance to have a go at letterpress printing.

Splendid idea. Could it happen here in the UK?

Next To Nothing: An Exhibition on the Price of Nothing and the Value of Everything

Our Sarah is exhibiting some of her letterpress stories at this, so go check it out!

Next to Nothing

15th Sept – 1st October, 2011. The Light (Top Floor), Leeds City Centre.

DIY art collective Black Dogs returns once more to the group show format with an exhibition containing contributions from over thirty individuals and collectives. Advancing Black Dogs’ critique of the institutional artworld, the contributors occupy various positions in relation to the label ‘artist’; raising questions about when something is art, who can make it and what the worth of calling it art is anyway.

The exhibition results from a series of collective meetings and conversations around notions of value. What is the radical potential of thrift and an economical approach? When and why is something cheap? What does it mean to be not-for-profit or operate in a non-capitalist fashion? How do we value our time and how does this find expression through the things we do or make? When are we working and when do we play?

Next To Nothing opens on Thursday 15th September at 5pm. All are welcome and refreshments will be available. There is a post-opening party and gig featuring Picore (from Spain), Conquest of Steel, War All The Time and Nope! from the DIY (not-for-profit) music community held at Wharf Chambers club for members and their guests. The exhibition continues Monday to Friday 4 – 7pm and Saturdays 12 – 6pm until 1st October. Entry is Free.
